Alternative Storage Solutions

If you are like me you feel like you just cleaned up the house and turn around to discover that your little monsters wasted no time in turning your living room to a disaster zone.

One thing I think we all need to invest in is alternative storage! I really hate to spend money on more modern items when I can get something that has more of a sentimental value and I know I can use them for so many different things!

Here are a couple of my latest purchases for my own family that can double as toys, kitchen aids and anything else you can think of. I like them because they can be placed anywhere in the house and they look like cool vintage pieces!

I recently bought a metal doll crib that we stuff our little stuff animals in and it stays in a little corner of my boys playroom. Its just one of the sweetest little toys ever! I hope someday I can give it to either my future daughter or granddaughter!

Suitcases are perfect for storing playclothes in or something like coloring books. We keep vintage crayons and coloring books in a very sweet suitcase we got years ago that says  “I’m going to grandmas house.” I found its easy to stick up high when we arent using it and handy to take down when we want it.

Vintage planters! You can find these at the thrift store for 25cents and they are so awesome for any playroom. I actually have one in my office that I stick pens and pencils in and its a happy little face I can look forward to everyday!

Going Global

Love using old globes in a room. I bought 2 last year for Christian that I got at the thrift store for $1! He loves to look at it and tell me where he wants to travel or hear about the stories of my early years in Brazil.  I love how these pictures show you how something like a globe or old map can look cool in both a boys and girls room!

yesteryear

Now,  it’s hard to get mad at that little cutie right there in the photo but lately (especially during Chrsitmas break- while I thought I was doing a excellent job at taking them fun places …) both my boys complain they are board at EVERYTHING.

I swear, we are driving down to the coast to see the seals that are all having babies and are on the beach-right there in front of them (hello in the middle of winter- what do they have to complain about???) and they say, I’m board (trust me I rather hear “Are we there yet” a million times more than “Im board!”).

We go to the famous San Diego Zoo and you hear, Im board….I can kinda sympathize with them on this one….how fun is it to watch the gorillas sit with his hairy back at you?

BUT people!!! I’ve just noticed this with the new generation. Kids just don’t really know how to entertain themselves….at least the ones I’ve seen??? It must be all the video games and face paced tv shows?

So lately I have been taking in all the tales my wonderful grandpa tells us about the time where there wasn’t all that junk aka video games and kids actually played outside, appreciated imagining things and were excited for that one special hour program they maybe got to listen to once a week.

My grandpa was telling us yesterday about began so excited to be able to listen to the “Lone Ranger,” “Little Orphan Annie” and my favorite “Baby Snooks.” He even told us exactly how they would introduce each show!

Christian and Carter both got super excited so I decided to get them the shows on cd! How fun with this be? I highly recommend you looking into getting your kids some stories on tape!  Im hoping it will open my kiddos mind to a playtime full of Indians, Detectives and all that old fashioned stuff! ;)

Wall Art

Via

There are a couple things I think every GOOD room must have. These items are relatively cheap, could be easily made and my favorite part- easily changed.

One of these things is ART! I absolutely think EVERY house needs a touch of vintage whether you  are into more modern touches or are a  fellow retro addict.

One thing I LOVE is vintage school posters. The artwork is always amazing, super original and they come in bigger sizes which is great for hanging in a child’s space. I recently bought a couple vintage Dick and Jane school posters (which the teacher used when she would read the children stories) and they are the perfect size to place over my boys beds!

Other ideas are taking pages from vintage books and hanging them, vintage maps framed or used as wallpaper or even vintage flash cards framed or used to spell out words and clipped to a clothes line in a room.

Obsessed

Oh my gosh how fun are these watches? These are made by a shop called CREAM on etsy. She takes vintage watches and then customizes them with fun faces and words. I am obsessed! Such a fun and unique gift idea! Love it!
